America Magazine on the Hyde Amendment

Here is an example of a reasoned, measured, thoughtful pro-life perspective from a Catholic publication.  Without doing any research, it sounds to me a lot like the United Methodist position on this most sensitive issue.  A friend recommended it to me.  Some of you may take issue with particular claims or parts of the argument.  You may know the weaknesses.  I’m OK with that.  I just want us to look at the measured, rational way the article proceeds.

Would that United Methodists find a way to talk about this matter with the carefulness and Christian concern expressed in this article.  We do disagree on substantive matters.  Let’s drop the appeals to emotion and the politicized rhetoric.  Let’s leave our touchiness aside and have a good discussion.  About abortion.  About sexuality.  About anything.

About Stephen Rankin

Professionally Steve Rankin is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He currently serves as University Chaplain at Southern Methodist University. Personally Steve is married to Joni and has four grown children and two grandchildren. I believe a big part of my particular calling has to do with leadership development in the church and with church renewal (they go hand in hand). You can find his personal thoughts on this site, as well as on twitter at @stephenwrankin.
